BIOGRAPHY

Andy Warburton, the resident Hed Kandi DJ, has been representing the stylish and iconic music brand since 2005. His air-miles have been seriously racked up as, beyond gigging across the UK, Andy travels extensively to rock international dance floors across global Kandiland. This has embraced every part of East and Western Europe, plus farther flung exotic locations, such as for example Casablanca, Sharm El Sheikh, Dubai, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, Toronto, Boston, the whole of Australia… in fact, it would GENUINELY be simpler to list the major cities where he HASN’T played, rather those that Andy has! Yet no matter the location, be it near or far, Andy continues to prove himself an ace exponent of the funkin’ Hed Kandi house sound blend. It’ll therefore come as no surprise to learn that his extensive musical knowledge has proven invaluable during the co-compiling process of so many of the Hed Kandi music CD compilation series (which are so eye-catchingly illustrated by Jason Brooks). There have been major contributions to the Serve Chilled, Beach House and Nu Cool streams for some years, Andy’s ear for hearing quality was recognised in 2006 with a progression to radio show broadcasting for the Kandi brand on a weekly basis. This role continues and presently you can hear him (often as not co-hosting with fellow leading Hed Kandi DJ Jim Breese) on The Kandi Lounge Show (Sundays 18.00-20.00 GMT) and the monthly Resident Mix for the Hed Kandi Radio Show (broadcast daily; both on Ministry of Sound Radio, available worldwide). Meanwhile the duo have their Nu Cool Show going out across the Galaxy FM radio network in the UK, their Balearic Boudoir Show on Sonica Radio 95.2 FM in Ibiza twice weekly, plus their Nu Cool & Beach House Show, which can be heard on Planet Radio 100.2 FM in Germany each Sunday. Further monthly guest DJ mixes go out regularly via MoS Chill Syndication, Alpha Radio in Japan, Radio 1 Budapest, Radio 1 Lebanon, Radio Montecarlo in Milan and many more. As for visual media, well, Andy’s winning smile and easy-going charm are no stranger to the camera, mainstream appearances include FTV, MTV Asia and Europe, Rapture, V Club TV, plus being featured on Kandi Vision, filmed at the glamorous Le Queen club in Paris. ‘Warbo’ initially honed his tastefully crowd-pleasing musical styles during the hothouse of six long gruelling summer seasons as an Ibiza DJ resident. Not just ‘any old’ Ibiza venue though, it was an extensive grounding that was wholly spent working along the phenomenal and compact Sunset Strip in San Antonio – him being, in turn, resident DJ at three of the four world famous beach bars located at the clubbing island’s daily evening musical focal point. Andy was spinning for eight-hours a day, seven days a week, primarily at Cafe Mambo. This being the late 90’s / early noughties, it was precisely the key period when this perfectly located beach venue exploded to become the most acclaimed pre-party musical destination on earth, even eclipsing its mighty next door neighbour, Cafe Del Mar, in popularity. It was a truly unique time and place in dance music history, with an un-phased Andy Warburton at the centre of the action. Further summer seasons were spent at Cafe Savannah, Mambo’s larger neighbouring/sister club-centric beach bar, plus its Sugar Sea offshoot (which was later absorbed into the even larger fronted Savannah). Those extensive Mambo and Savannah experiences at the epicentre of influential Ibiza club culture in its heyday saw Andy working alongside most of the biggest and most respected names in the business on a daily basis – DJ’s such as Pete Tong, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, David Morales and Carl Cox. Indeed, most of his true influences were appearing on regularly, with Andy able to personally acknowledge his musical debt to DJ-producers like Jose Padilla, Norman Jay, Frankie Knuckles, Joey Negro, Sasha, Digweed, Don Carlos, Larry Heard, Francois K and Masters At Work (to name but a few). Naturally Andy started to become recognised for his uncanny ability to tastefully match mix technique to differing musical styles, his unerring ear enabling him to effortlessly spin quality Balearic disco and chilled cocktail classics to beach dwellers throughout the day, move easily into blissed and downtempo electronica for the often intense, emotional sunset and evening periods, then morph gradually into the more pounding rhythmic styles suited to later in the night. During Andy’s years spinning seemingly endlessly at Cafe Mambo the place evolved into the most influential pre-club party destination yet known – a true phenomenon of the age. Each evening hordes of dedicated party-goers descend upon the bar, with its easily accessible DJ box, in order to witness, interact, even touch the cream of international superstar DJing talent as the legends arrived to promote their main clubbing events taking place later in the night at the island Super venues. Of course, Andy himself is no stranger to those same Ibiza mega clubs, having played each and every one of them on a regular basis, both during his extensive seasons as an island DJ resident, then as a visiting headline guest in subsequent years. His infectious blend of Deep Balearic House and other funkin’ styles have enlivened Amnesia, Eden, El Divino, Es Paradis, Pacha, Privilege and Space for promotions such as Cream, Clockwork Orange, Dance Valley, Renaissance and, naturally enough, Hed Kandi. Where does it go for Andy Warburton from here? Well, around the globe another few dozen times, of course – for example, in 2010 he finally found the time and opportunity to play at the Miami WMC, so he’s know looking forward to many more of those! But for sure you can additionally anticipate much more activity in the studio, not just as he prepares the many weekly radio programmes and mixes for Hed Kandi, Ministry of Sound and others, but increasingly as Andy further develops his own original dance productions… Watch this space!
